TEMPORARY DANGER AREA (TDA EG D398K-R) NORTH WALES & SNOWDON
TDA COMPLEX – RPAS OPERATIONS

1 — Introduction

1.1 Due to the impact of COVID-19 on some Search and Rescue functions, there is an urgent requirement to implement RPAS systems to conduct patrols and the search function of SAR operations to ensure manned assets remain available where required. In order to implement this replacement service, the Civil Aviation Authority deems it appropriate to promulgate a number of Temporary Danger Areas of accommodate this state requirement.
1.2 A Temporary Danger Area (TDA) complex will be established from 11th July 2020 until the impacted SAR functions can operate as required. The TDA complex has been established to facilitate Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) Remotely Piloted Air System (RPAS) for the replacement service. The Schiebel S-100 Camcopter will operate from Caernarfon Airport (EGCK).

2 — Timings

2.1 Multiple flights are scheduled to take place. Actual times of TDA activation will be promulgated by NOTAM.
2.2 Due to operational reasons, less than 24 hours’ notice may be provided for the activation of the required TDAs.

5 — Operating Authority, DAAIS

5.1 The Operating Authority for the TDA areas EG D398K-R will be RAF Valley. A Danger Area Activity Information Service (DAAIS) will be available during ATC hours of operation from Valley Radar on 125.225 MHz and telephone number 01407-762241 ext. 7461.
5.2 In the event RAF Valley are unable to provide a service, the Operating Authority and DAAIS will transfer to Caernarfon Airport. A Danger Area Activity Information Service (DAAIS) will be available during ATC hours of operation from Caernarfon Radio on 122.255 MHZ and telephone number 01286-830800.
5.3 Confirmation of the DAAIS provider will be confirmed within the establishment/activation NOTAM.

6 — Caernarfon AD Operations

6.1 Caernarfon Airport is strictly a PPR airport.
6.2 When pilots contact the airport for PPR, they will be advised of the TDA activations and direct them to the Bristow’s website detailing the NOTAMs and TDAs in use.
6.3 Aircraft may be requested to remain outside the ATZ until the RPAS has exited the ATZ into the relevant Temporary Danger Areas.
6.4 Pilots should plan to contact RAF Valley on 125.225 MHz who will advise pilots of the status and usage of the relevant Temporary Danger Areas.

7 — Holyhead CTA (Class C)

7.1 Due to the location of the required patrol/search areas (EG D398O and D398P), the TDAs are in close proximity to the Holyhead CTAs and therefore the TDAs are subject to the Policy Statement titled ‘SPECIAL USE AIRSPACE - SAFETY BUFFER POLICY FOR AIRSPACE DESIGN PURPOSES’.
7.2 In accordance with paragraph 3 ‘Policy Dispensations’, a TOI has been agreed between Bristow and NATS to reduce any potential operational impact to both parties.

8 — Notification

8.1 The sponsor will promulgate TDA activations by NOTAM on the day of planned use.
